We Are Still Proud Part III
Our business is about encouraging people to take individual responsibility for their own happiness. Simply put, if you are unhappy in a circumstance but that circumstance is in your control, we want to encourage you to take positive steps to change that circumstance. And, where a circumstance is out of your control, that you take positive steps in changing your attitude towards that circumstance.
As alumni, we cannot rewind and stop the horrible acts and circumstances surrounding the recent sandusky scandal. However, we as alumni, can respond with a compassionate heart to those impacted; this including not only those directly impacted by these actions - the children and their families, but also those indirectly impacted, our Penn State family.

Sitting around the kitchen table of their Post Falls home one afternoon, Shawn and Jannette Bendinelli told a friend how much they loved their alma mater and how heartbroken they were at the recent turn of events. Good memories swirled between them—classes, professors, friends, and football, yes, football. The two 1994 and 1995 Penn State graduates were devastated at the headline crushing news that had rocked their beloved university for months.
The word heartbroken doesn’t usually apply to the way a graduate feels about their alma mater, but it was the word Jannette used more than once.
“Can’t we do something to help change the public perception of our school,” they asked each other. “Penn State’s so much more than football….How can we refocus on the positive and give us and other alums a way to stand proud?”
Within minutes, they hatched a plan: they would design a t-shirt shouting out Penn pride and market it along with their other products at www.evokeapparelcompany.com. The Bendinelli’s own Evoke Apparel Company, a strictly online, indy clothing company that encourages people to “Follow Your Passion” and help make the world a better place through charitable donations. Evoke’s t-shirts, hoodies, tanks and kids clothes are emblazoned with bold phrases and graphics celebrating everything from farms to cycling to yoga to inspirational phrases.
With each Evoke purchase, the customer is invited to donate $1 to a charity on Evoke’s list of over 50 vetted organizations and Evoke matches the gift with another $1. They also pay $1 from the profits of each shirt to its designer. Made in the U.S.A., many of the T’s are printed on 100% certified cotton, designed by Northwest artists, produced in Chicago and mailed directly to customers.

As a Certified “B” Corporation, one of 500 in the United States, Evoke has been formally recognized by B Lab, a nonprofit organization that certifies companies that focus on sustainable business practices, positive social change, give back to the community and environment, and are 100% sweat shop free. Think TransFair, which verifies Fair Trade coffee, or USGBC, which certifies LEED buildings.
Shawn created two t-shirt designs to promote Penn State pride and the couple chose two charities, For the Future (a Penn State scholarship fund) and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which would split a $2 give-back from shirt sales. Designs hit cyber space in early August and within a few days orders were coming in.
“WE ARE….more than football
WE ARE…more than JUST football
WE ARE…STILL PROUD!

Riding the bow wave of social media, Evoke shuns traditional advertising and concentrates on guerrilla marketing and social media to build brand awareness and disseminate its message to the masses. Facebook, Twitter, SEO website optimization, Pinterest and a blog have helped Evoke establish itself a niche company in the ultra competitive graphic shirt business. Since the company’s inception in January 2011, sales have increased 50% per quarter.
While Evoke makes its way through the cutthroat labyrinth of custom T-shirts, Shawn makes a living as a freelance web designer, developer and art director. Co-owner Jannette is the company’s business administrator as well as full-time mom of three-year-old Chiara.
The two are keenly aware they are bucking the traditional pathways to success and freely, if not proudly, admit they believe life and work should dovetail into activities that are true to a person’s passions and goals.
“Money is important, sure, but it’s secondary to our belief that we have to remain true to ourselves and our beliefs,” Jannette says. “I have a high sensitivity meter when it comes to what’s right, to justice, and I believe we have to be true to ourselves and our beliefs.”
Shawn, the freer spirit of the two, has always been restless, full of ideas, ready to take risks.
“I was always told to follow the system, to do what is expected,” he says. “But we have grown to feel more and more stuck in that place. We are passionate about Evoke, about making a positive difference in people’s lives and in the world through a business. Otherwise, we’re hypocrites. It’s time to light a fire under out butts!”

The sparks of that fire created Evoke, and the Bendinelli’s are fanning the flames with a new outside-the-cubicle plan this fall. With Chiara in tow, they’re hitting the road. Literally.
Shawn and Jannette are purging possessions now and plan to put their Post Falls house in a vacation rental pool. A sleek 19-foot-long, r·pod ultra-lite travel trailer will be their new home for four to six weeks so the Bendinelli’s can attend races, music festivals and sporting events like the Teva Games and promote their clothing line. This first foray will not be the last and the couple intends to incorporate it into their unconventional marketing plan.
Wrapped in Evoke Apparel graphics, the trailer will not only be home and office, it’ll also be a traveling billboard circulating around the country as a clear example of how one family is following their passion.
We Are Still Proud Part II
In the past, it has seemed that Penn State has only been measured or defined by our football program. To the world, we as alumni, want to be known as more than just our football program.
While attending Penn State, we, learned many valuable lessons. One lesson was to address problems and find resolve. Then, learning from those problems, continue forward in a positive direction. As alumni, taking this approach in life has resulted in us personally building a business around that same principle.
To help ensure that great people, programs and innovations continue to come out of Penn State, every “We Are…” T-shirt, hoodie and tank top purchase gives $1 to For the Future, a Penn State scholarship fund. Also, in a spirit of compassion to those directly impacted by the recent scandal and in our hope for a future free from these crimes, an additional $1 from each purchase is donated to The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
We Are Still Proud Part I
As parents, we can only imagine the range of emotions and difficulties occurring as a result of discovering your child has been severely exploited and mistreated. As Penn State Alumni and apart of one of the largest families in the world, watching the scandal unfold stirred up many other emotions within us as well.
As in any large family, the actions of a select few within the family may be unexplained and unjustified, but the love and pride for the family unit as a whole - where you come from - does not stop. It may be difficult, in such a time, to focus on the positive but with so many good people, programs and innovations coming out of Penn State, how could we not remain proud to be apart of this family?
In response to an email sent out by the Penn State Alumni Association on July 27th, 2012 and in the spirit of Penn State, we desire to do what we can to help. As Alums and owners of Evoke Apparel Company, we want to encourage our fellow alumni, current students and those who are fans of Penn State to show we are still proud. We want to encourage you to join us in shouting to the world that we are and always were more than the stereotypes used to define our amazing Alma Mater.
Be Open to Reinventing Yourself
Most of us start down paths in life with a certain vision of how we see things happening. Often however, life has a way of throwing us curve balls or presenting other options that can become true passions or callings. Be observant and open to new things and opportunities. Often it’s when we reinvent ourselves that we truly find ourselves.
This is a great video by Artist and Film Maker Hillman Curtis. As you’ll see, Hillman has taken was started out as a creative “vacation” from corporate projects and has turned it into his life’s passion.
Find your passions and follow them.

If you’re looking for inspiration, one might say Post Falls couple Shawn and Jannette Bendinelli have got your back covered.
With a line of T-shirts, the Bendinellis want to instill in others the importance of following a passion in life, and in doing so, finding a way to better one’s community and the world.
The Bendinellis hope to convey that message and to inspire others to give back through their recently established home-based online business venture, Evoke Apparel Co.
“We want to evoke change in people’s thinking or actions,” says Shawn Bendinelli. “Our tagline is ‘Wear what defines you.’”
Phrases screen printed onto the company’s shirts say things like, “Do what you love, love what you do,” “Dreams do come true,” “Carpe diem,” and, “Simple is beautiful.”
Says Bendinelli, “Some people roll with brands because it’s popular, but we want apparel that displays what people’s passions are with inspirational and motivational sayings that are high design and that represents who they are.”
Bendinelli says the website for Evoke (http://www.evokeapparel.com) launched last November and currently sells T-shirts and hoodies in men’s, women’s, and children’s sizes, as well as onesies for infants.
For each tee that’s sold, Bendinelli says the company allows the customer to pick a charity from a list of more than 50 nonprofit organizations to receive a $1 donation from the sale of the shirt. Evoke matches that $1 donation, so the charity receives a total of $2. Evoke also pays a dollar to the artist who designed the shirts’ graphics, he says.
“A lot of T-shirt companies will pay a one-time fee to use an artist’s design, but we wanted to create something that would be a residual income, so we pay a dollar per sale of the item and that is for the life of the shirt,” Bendinelli says.
He says some of the artists who’ve designed graphics featured on Evoke’s shirts are based in the Inland Northwest.
Evoke’s T-shirts average $25 each, while hooded sweatshirts are $45 and toddler- and infant-sized shirts are priced between $18 and $20.
Evoke also sells shirts on its site to benefit a designated Inland Northwest-based charitable organization. For the sale of those shirts, he says Evoke donates 50 percent of the item’s sale price to the local nonprofit.
Recently, he says Evoke donated half of the proceeds from the sales of a shirt that said “Dreams do come true” to Habitat for Humanity of North Idaho.
Jannette Bendinelli has served for four years as an active volunteer with that organization, and the couple says that they hope to launch similar campaigns in the future to benefit other local nonprofits.
“Throughout the year, we will pick different charities, or if we have one come to us and they are doing a campaign, we will partner with them,” Shawn Bendinelli says.
Because Evoke Apparel’s online store has been live for less than six months, Bendinelli declines to disclose any sales figures, but he says the business so far has sold around 50 shirts.
“We are just getting things rolling; this is the kick start to trying to get it out into the public,” he says. “We have gotten good feedback on the designs and the company’s mission. Now we just need to get it out in front of people.”
Bendinelli says all of the tees and hoodies Evoke sells are made from certified organic cotton, and the screen printing process is water-based and thus environmentally friendly.
The couple contracts with a Chicago-based company to print the designs onto the shirts and to fulfill orders, he says.
The couple runs the business out of their Post Falls home and are its sole employees.
Some of the most popular shirt designs so far feature Evoke’s own logo, a square with four diagonal arrows pointing toward each corner, and designs that are themed around cycling.c
Popular charity picks since the site launched include Doctors Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity International, and the Humane Society of the U.S., Bendinelli says.
A full list of the charities for which Evoke lets its customers select as the recipient of the $2 donation when they purchase an item are listed on the business’s website. The list includes efforts dedicated to the environment, international relief, health care, youth support, cancer research, education, animal welfare, and human services.
Bendinelli says the organizations were selected based on ratings by Charity Watch and Charity Navigator, both of which are independent watchdog groups that evaluate philanthropic groups’ financial health and operational transparency.
The Bendinellis say they hope to offer a feature on the company’s website soon that allows customers to recommend the addition of more nonprofit service groups, including local organizations.
The idea for Evoke Apparel was born from another venture the Bendinelli’s own called The Happy Human (http://www.thehappyhuman.com), which Shawn Bendinelli explains is a social movement intended to encourage people to find their passions, and to “be who you are, do what you love, and give from the heart.”
The couple launched The Happy Human in 2010, and established Evoke Apparel as that venture’s sister company to generate income for the Bendinellis and their two-year-old daughter, Chiara.
Aside from his and his wife’s own entrepreneurial endeavors, Shawn Bendinelli is a managing partner of the Spokane-based film production studio, North by Northwest (http://www.nxnw.net). Shawn and Jannette Bendinelli each are also highly involved with a number of nonprofit groups.
In addition to her work with Habitat for Humanity of North Idaho, Jannette founded a group last year called Creating for Community. The intent of the organization is to provide a creative outlet where its members can work on various arts and crafts projects, and the finished pieces then are donated to various community organizations.
The group recently donated baby blankets to a pregnancy center in Coeur d’Alene, she says.
Apart from the position he has with North by Northwest and his philanthropic businesses, Shawn Bendinelli is active with International Assistance Program (http://www.iassist.org), a Spokane-based nonprofit group. He says that group’s mission is to provide aid to impoverished children, as well as assistance with water projects, micro-loan financing, and other endeavors in South America and Africa.
He says he might travel to Ethiopia this November to work on a project there with other members of the organization.
The Bendinellis say their upcoming plans for Evoke Apparel are to continue promoting the business through online advertising and local ad campaigns to create new customers.
“We are just excited for people to grab onto this concept and share their ideas,” says Shawn.
Adds Jannette, “The hope is that people embrace what they want to do. There is nothing that gets me more excited than seeing someone do what they are supposed to do … just to watch them do something and see that they enjoy it.”

Officially one week into my 40 Days of Water and so far it hasn’t been all that bad - until today! Holy crap, I need a latte so bad! I am trying to figure out why today has been such a difficult day. Overall my cravings or desire to have wine, coffee and yerba haven’t been all that bad - really it has been more of a mental game, reminding myself that I cannot drink any of it. Today, I find myself going to our receptionists desk to raid her always full chocolate bowl. No really, this is a strange thing for me, as I don’t have a very addictive personality. Normally (and it drives my wife crazy) I can pass on sweets, chocolate and other temptations with ease. I need to do some research on what the amount of time is for the average person to start having cravings when giving something up.
WATER FACT:
Did you know that more than 1 BILLION people don’t have access to clean drinking water? I always knew it was a lot, but I had no idea it was a billion.
If you would like to help change this figure help out by:
1. Express gratitude. – When you appreciate what you have, what you have appreciates in value. Being grateful for the goodness that is already evident in your life will bring you a deeper sense of happiness. We have a hard time ever being happy if we aren’t thankful for what we already have.
2. Cultivate optimism. – Winners have the ability to manufacture their own optimism. No matter what the situation, the successful Happy Human is the one who will always find a way to put an optimistic spin on a situation. They know failure only as an opportunity to grow and learn a new lesson from life. People who think optimistically see the world as a place packed with endless opportunities, especially when things get difficult.
3. Don’t over-think and social compare. – Comparing yourself to someone else can be poisonous. If we’re somehow ‘better’ than the person that we’re comparing ourselves to, it gives us an unhealthy sense of superiority. If we’re ‘worse’ than the person that we’re comparing ourselves to, we usually discredit the hard work that we’ve done and dismiss all the progress that we’ve made. Most of the time this type of social comparison doesn’t stem from a healthy place. If you feel called to compare yourself to something, compare yourself to an earlier version of yourself.
4. Practice Random acts of kindness. – Performing an act of kindness releases serotonin in your brain. (Serotonin is a substance that has TREMENDOUS health benefits, including making us feel more blissful.) Selflessly helping someone is a super powerful way to feel good inside. Even cooler about this kindness kick is that not only will you feel better, but so will people watching the act of kindness. Bystanders will be blessed with a release of serotonin just by watching what’s going on.
5. Build social relationships. – The Happiest Humans on the planet are the ones who have deep, meaningful relationships. Did you know studies show that people’s mortality rates are DOUBLED when they’re lonely? There’s a warm fuzzy feeling that comes from having an active circle of good friends who you can share your experiences with. We feel connected and a part of something more meaningful than our lonesome existence.
6. Develop strategies for coping. – How you respond to the difficult moments is what shapes your character. Sometimes crap happens – it’s inevitable. It can be hard to come up with creative solutions in the moment when manure is making its way up toward the fan. It helps to have healthy strategies for coping pre-rehearsed, on-call, and in your arsenal at your disposal.
7. Forgive. – Harboring feelings of hatred is horrible for your well-being. Your mind doesn’t know the difference between past and present emotion. When you ‘hate’ someone, and you’re continuously thinking about it, those negative emotions are eating away at your immune system.
8. Savor life’s joys. – Deep happiness cannot exist without slowing down to enjoy the moment. It’s easy in a world of wild stimuli and omnipresent movement to forget to embrace life’s enjoyable experiences. When we fail to appreciate, we rob the moment of its magic. It’s the simple things in life that can be the most rewarding if we remember to fully experience them.
9. Commit to your goals. – Being completely dedicated to doing something comes fully-equipped with an ineffable force. Amazing things start happening when we commit ourselves to doing whatever it takes to get somewhere. When you’re fully committed to doing something, you have no choice but to do that thing. Counter-intuitively, having no option – where you can’t change your mind – subconsciously makes humans happier because they know part of their purpose.
10. Practice spirituality. – When we practice spirituality, we recognize that life is bigger than us. We surrender the silly idea that we are the mightiest thing ever. It enables us to connect to the source of all creation and embrace a connectedness with everything that exists. Some of the most accomplished people I know feel that they’re here doing work they’re “called to do.”
11. Take care of your body. – Taking care of your body is crucial to being the happiest person you can be. If you don’t have your physical energy in good shape, then your mental energy (your focus), your emotional energy (your feelings), and your spiritual energy (your purpose) will all be negatively affected. Did you know that studies conducted on people who were clinically depressed showed that consistent exercise raises happiness levels just as much as Zoloft? Not only that, but here’s the double whammy… Six months later, the people who participated in exercise were less likely to relapse because they had a higher sense of self-accomplishment and self-worth.
